Safeguarding
How we protect the people we work with.
Raising a concern
If you have a concern about the conduct of anyone connected to ZARA Tanzania Charity — staff, volunteers, partners or travellers — tell us. You do not need to be certain, and you do not need evidence. It is our job to look into it.

Mark an email “Safeguarding concern” and it is read as a priority. If a child is in immediate danger, contact the local authorities first, then tell us.
What we commit to
No identifiable image of a child without consent
A photograph of an identifiable child is not published on this site unless a documented release from a guardian is on file. This is enforced in the code, not by memory: every image is classified, and one without a release is withheld from the live site automatically.
Anyone working with children is background-checked
Volunteers whose placement brings them into contact with children are checked before placement. That check is a condition of the placement, not a formality, and it is not waived for short stays.
People are named only when they agree to be named
Subjects of stories and photographs are named when they consent to be named, and are asked again before anything is republished. We do not publish before-and-after photographs of children, or anonymous close-ups.
Communities are not a visitor attraction
Project visits by travellers are arranged with the community in advance, on terms they set. Visitors are briefed on what may and may not be photographed.
Child sponsorship correspondence
Sponsors receive progress notes and, twice a year, a letter from the child they sponsor. All correspondence passes through the programme team in Moshi — it is read before it is sent in either direction, and no contact details are exchanged between a sponsor and a child or their family.
About child sponsorshipStill to be published
Two things belong on this page and are not here yet:
- A named safeguarding lead, with direct contact details, so a concern reaches a person rather than a shared inbox.
- The written safeguarding policy and the date the board last reviewed it.
Until they are, the contact details at the top of this page reach the team in Moshi directly.
